For 124 years, American Samoans have been subjected to a unique and often overlooked status as U.S. Nationals. As we approach the 125th year of this colonial legacy, it's time to break free from the chains of injustice.
It's important to emphasize that the movement seeks a simplified and free path to citizenship for American Samoan U.S. Nationals, acknowledging their unique status. The goal is not to subject them to the same scrutiny and requirements as foreign nationals seeking naturalization. The movement aims to rectify the current situation where they are treated as if they are foreign nationals despite their existing connection to the United States.
Despite our unwavering loyalty to the United States, we have been denied the fundamental rights and privileges afforded to other American citizens. We are taxpayers without representation, subject to federal laws but with limited voice in our governance. We are a people with a rich cultural heritage, yet we are often denied the opportunities and protections that come with full citizenship.
The recent attacks in Alaska underscore the vulnerability of our community. These incidents highlight the urgent need for greater protection and support for American Samoans, both in the territory and on the mainland.
We are a self-determined people, capable of making our own choices. Yet, we are forced to navigate a complex legal system that treats us as second-class citizens. To become U.S. citizens, we must undergo the same arduous process as immigrants, despite our deep-rooted ties to the United States.
It's time to demand the equality and justice we have earned. By joining the Beyond the Territory Line movement, we can amplify our collective voice and drive meaningful change. Together, we can shape a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.
We have served our nation with distinction, with our sons and daughters fighting on the frontlines of wars and serving in law enforcement. We have contributed to the American economy, working tirelessly in various industries. And yet, we remain marginalized, our voices unheard.
Let us not merely ask what our nation can do for us, but what we can do for our nation. We have proven our loyalty and our dedication. It's time to recognize our contributions and grant us the rights and privileges we have earned going on 125 years by our next Flag Day on April 17, 2025.
